http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/dying-forest-one-year-to-save-the-amazon-408926.html)

Guadua! An alternative to deforestation
A-Deforestation and global heating
The CO² rate in the atmosphere has been stable as long as carbon sinks, such as primary forest were able to play their regulatory role. The environnmental depletion reducing the efficiency of those carbon sinks on one side while emitting huge amount of CO2 on the other side is reaching such proportions that the self regulation mecanisms of the earth are starting to crack all over.
The CO² act as a heat accumulator in the atmosphere, creating a global heating that could eventually compromise the vegetal life on the continents as well as in the ocean through the disappearance of the photosynthetic algaes, and consequently compromise the whole alimentary chain depending on it, man included.
Today, the CO² rate is reaching 387 ppm (part par million) and supposed to reach the critical 500 ppm point break in about 30 years if we keep following the same trend. At that point some climate modelisations programmes such as « daisy world » or Lee Kumps's indicate the unleashing of such positive retroactions that will become such that heat and climatic disasters will get totally out of control.
Exemple : The rain on the Amazonian forest depends from 50 to 70 % of evapo-transpiration (from the leaves), the rest comes from the ocean. If we overpass the 40 % destruction limit, the hydro-climatic system that sustain the ecosystem good functionning will be desactivated and a cronic drought will take over at an exponential speed.
The Makarieva theory even proves that we can expect another positive retroaction precipitating the desertification process: once the evaporation from the ocean will be more important then the forest one the process will reverse and the terrestrial water masses will get attracted toward the ocean. http://yonne.lautre.net/spip.php?article4048)
To conclude, the dried up vegetal cover entering a decomposition state or consumed by fire will generate enormous emissions of methane and CO2.
If in a zone covered with vegetation, the rain water infiltrates itself until the ground water and circulates in a closed circuit, when the vegetal cover disappear, soils get compacted by the tropical rain and by the absence of micro organism that were airing the soils.
Water accumulating on the surface causes floods and continue to wash down the unprotected vegetal soil already naturally poor (extracting generally its fertility from the accelarated recycling of organic matter)
The water beds are getting sedimented, which causes further floods and water ends up disappearing from the ecosystem.
The heat, precedently reflected by the foliage, further evacuated by strong winds to the north of the hemisphere, regulating the world climate, gets accumulated on the ground
It reinforce again the evaporation while the UV end up the bacterian « genocide » on which organic matter recycling depends.
In spite of those facts, deforestation increases by 25% every year with 70 % of the extracted wood turned into smoke.
Here is the forecast for the Amazonian forest by 2030
http://news.mongabay.com/2008/0227-nepstad_amazon.html
History, show us that the zones where were born and perished great civilization became sterile, but today the danger is totally different: moderrn civilization is globalized
B- A pioneer plant for reforestation (stamm)
« The Guadua has an astonishing tolerance, growing in relatively poor and acid grounds (pH 4.2), able to cover a broad range of precipitations (800 mm untill 10000mm), to support frequent floods, well-drained grounds or bank of river: this plant grows almost everywhere.
It is considered a dominant specie but nevertheless “social” in the biological community ».
The trees benefit from the microclimate created by the guadual to develop itself, protected in the shade's humidity, supplied with abundant organic matter.
To understand the symbiotic behavior in the vegetable physiology of guadua, we must take into account the mineral characteristics of the tropical ground: Because of downpours, the nutrients are permanently washed down and drained in the depths of the ground.
The rhyzomes (roots) of the guaduas generally associated with the endo-microrhizzes, reach only 60 cm of depth and doesn't have access to these minerals. The arborescent species, easily reach those minerals and transfer them in their vital cycle .
Most of these species will never reach sunlight and their decomposition feeds microbiological fauna. The nutrients remain in the higher black ground, metabolized by the guadua: a perfect symbiosis.
Once it is established, the guadual dominates from 60 to 80% of the biomass (deWilde R, 1993), then gradually leave it s «monopoly» as the trees's higher trunks exceed the canopée.
In Uraba, close to the north border, close to Panama, the guadua forest cover only 40% of the forest ».
It will take approximately 400 years to the natural succession to pass from the pioneer stage to the the climacic stage, a stage when the ecosystem becomes complex enough so that it's constituitve parts getting more and more specialized and diferentiated act in cooperation (more then in competition) to reach the homeostasy, this organism property to maintain its internal medium in a dynamic stability in spite of the variations caused by the changes of the internal and external medium by continiously reajusting it s balance through negative retroactions.
B- Soils protection
The average forests produce annually between 2 - 5% of their total biomass.
The guaduals (guadua forests) produce some 10 to 14%, bringing to the soil between 2 and 4 ton/ha/año of biomass but the general annual contribution of biomass oscillates between 30 and 35 ton/ha.
In the coffee zone of Quindio (Heart of the Guadua culture in Colombia), native forests and guaduals had the best rate of microbial activity, of C02 collecting and structural stability of the soils.
In the guaduales have been detected the highest rates of diversity of organisms (mésofaune), organic matter, moisture rate, porosity and hydraulic conductivity.
Moreover, the interlaced system of rizhomes (roots, 200 km/ha) forms a mesh which functions like a biological wall of retention preventing erosion, along the shores as on the slopes.
In Colombia, it is forbidden to cut it at less than 6 meters of the river beds and the environment Department even subsidizes the culture of this plant
C- Water conservation
Decreasing the evaporation, the dense hood formed by the foliage is especially effective for the regulation of the dynamic of superficial water and for the brooks flow (Castano 2002). The strong silica concentration in the leaves also acts as vapor blocker.
The narrowness of the leaves, the soil nature and its organic texture under the guaduals makes favourable the retention and the filtration of water especially comparing to other traditional agro-ecosystems of the area (coffee, plantations of pines, eucalyptus, grazing, etc)
The average water volume retained in the first 5 centimetres under the guaduales is of 180 m3/ha. This water stored in winter is restored to the ground during the dry season to maintain the stability of the ecosystem and hydrical regulation.
The national centre of bamboo's message is explicit “Where there is guadua, there is water. Where there is water, there is life. Where there is life, there is man” which might not be the most reassuring part :)
D- Re-establishment of Biodiversity
Several studies indicated the importance of the forests dominated by guadua for biodiversity conservation : in the guaduals are recorded more than 1.000 associated species of flora, 29 species of mammals, 54 species of birds and an impressive density of insects and micro-organisms.
The latter are particularly important for the biosphère regulation as it accounts for 80% of the terrestrial fauna's biomass.
A high percentage of the soto wood vegetation corresponds to the vegetation of regeneration, which underlines the importance of the guaduals for the regeneration of the rare arborescent species of the zone.
Guadua angustifolia Kunt is regarded as one of the most dynamic and more specialized species of the Colombian Andean Zone, as for its durable character, its environmental benefits and its relation with the living beings which coexist with it.
Many scientists agree that the earth system needs 50 % of its surface covered with forest rich in biodiversity and biomass to keep able to regulate the climate. A guadua forest is an agroecosystem supplying wood and food particularly stablle thanks to a human intervention limited to selective extraction. A usual agroforestry works like industrial monoculture: plowing, planting and harvesting leaving the grounds without protection and unable to reach the climax an ecosystem needs to be able to fullfil its regulating function.
E-A substitute to deforestation
In the book “Grow your own house” it is considered that the annual harvest of a 1 hectare bamboo plantation provides enough material for the construction of a structure with the same dimension.
A Professor Jansen study in Costa Rica for the Funbambu program shows that to build 1000 Social housing annually, the necessary usable matter corresponds to the annual harvest of a 60 hectare of bamboo forest or 500 ha of average primary forest - which causes erosion and need for quick reseeding.
A bamboo forest is mature in about 8 years and will produce 30 meters culms in 6 months but will get all its mechanical properties after 4 years compared to 20 years for a mature pine or eucalyptus: a pine toxic for biodiversity and most eucalyptus drying out ground waters.
It is said that the guadua is the wood of the future because when the extraction rates will have exceeded the renewal rates of the forests, it is the bamboo which will take over.
The primary forest will be relayed by the traditional agroforestery which in spite of offering limited environmental benefits allows a relatively high rate of rotation.
Will it be fast enough to answer the limitless development of the worldwide economy knowing that the total GDP should quadruple from now to 2050?
Maybe that is a question we already should start to think of
